Orchids Habitat
Hong Kong used to be covered in tropical broadleaf evergreen forests. The hilly forests were first destroyed by farming activities and then by large scale deforestation in the Second World War. Now, the vegetation in Hong Kong is mainly comprised of secondary forests, shrublands and grasslands. We can find wild orchid species in all these vegetations.
林地 Woodland
Woodland occupies some 25% of Hong Kong’s land area. Dominant tree species belong to Euphorbiaceae, Sapotaceae, Moraceae, Sterculiaceae, Myrtaceae, Fagaceae, Lauraceae, and Theaceae. Finer division of Hong Kong’s woodland include lowland and montane secondary forests, fung shui woods, and plantations. These woodlands form diverse habitats for the growth and development of orchid species. In particular, lowland and montane forests provide moist cliffs and a rocky environment for orchids.
草地 Grassland
Grassland is the early successional habitat in Hong Kong. They are strongly influenced by strong winds, high light intensity and thin soil. Thus, forest succession into shrubland and woodland are slow. Hong Kong's grasslands are close to 17% of Hong Kong’s total land areas. Grasslands are mainly found on hillside and abandoned fields. Hillside grasslands provide open and exposed habitats for some orchid species. Following rapid urban and economic development, agriculture has been declining in Hong Kong. Many farmlands were not managed and become abandoned, which are important habitats to some orchid species in Hong Kong. For example, Spiranthes sinensis can be found in this habitat.
Shrubland
Shrublands are commonly found in Hong Kong country parks, which account for about 24% of the total land areas of Hong Kong. Shrubs are perennial plants, mainly broad-leaved species. Shrubs have no obvious main trunk, and branches appear near the ground. Wild orchids such as Tainia hongkongensis and Cymbidium ensifolium can be found in shrublands in Hong Kong.
